The airplane departed RAF Driffield on a transit flight to RAF Oakington. On final approach in poor visibility, at a height of about 500 feet, the airplane suffered an engine failure and crashed a mile south of the airbase. Five crew members were killed and a sixth was injured.

Circumstances:
The crew departed Bournemouth-Hurn Airport on a special operation on behalf of the Telecommunications Research Establishment, serving as a target for the Telecommunications Flying Unit. While cruising over The Channel, the crew encountered poor weather conditions and the pilot became disoriented. He attempted an emergency landing on the Chesil Bank when the airplane crashed into the sea. The pilot was killed and the second occupant was injured.

The airplane departed RAF Syerston at 1640LT on an operation to Düsseldorf. At 2229LT Heston d/f station acknowledged a call from this aircraft, asking for a bearing. Tragically, it is believed the crew misinterpreted the information sent by Heston and when last heard on w/t the Hampden was plotted in a 40 mile radius of 47° 30' N 13° W, some 270 miles off Brest and approximately 300 miles southwest of Land's end. No trace of the airplane was found.

The twin engine airplane departed RAF Dumfries on a navigation exercise, carrying one instructor and five cadets. After passing over Keswick, it descended low over the Derwentwater, hit the surface of the lake and crashed in the Calfclose Bay, about two km south of Keswick. All six crew members were killed.

The airplane departed RAF Marham at 1715LT on an operation to Emden. It ditched at 2306LT off Wells-next-the-Sea. The pilot decided to put the bomber down in the sea, rather than land on the beach which, he supposed, might be mined. After being picked up by the combined efforts of the Wells life boat and an RAF ASR, Sgt Helfer was told that he had been correct in his assumptions. Earlier, it is believed the Wellington was hit by Flak.
