Circumstances:
The airplane departed RAF Waddington at 2325LT on a mine laying operation off Lorient. Flying south from Grantham, the starboard engine failed. The crew elected to return when the airplane went out of control and crashed in a field in Boothby Pagnell. Three crew members were killed while the pilot was injured.

The airplane departed RAF Waddington at 2305LT on May 30 on an operation to Cologne. On return to base at 0403LT the following morning, the pilot lost control of the airplane upon touchdown. The airplane veered off runway and collided with a parked Lancaster belonging to the Conversion Flight (registered R5842). In addition to the injuries sustained by two Hampden crew members, two airmen in the Lancaster were also hurt.

Following a cross country flight, the crew was unable to return to base at RAF Skellingthorpe due to poor weather conditions. The pilot diverted to RAF Waddington but the airplane landed in heavy rain on a grassy runway. Unable to stop within the remaining distance, the airplane overran, crossed the boundary fence and a road, lost its undercarriage and came to rest in a field. All three crew members escaped with minor injuries.

The crew was engaged in a local test flight at RAF Waddington. During the takeoff roll, the airplane deviated to the left. The pilot tried to counteract but the airplane veered off runway to the left, crossed the tarmac and collided with two parked aircraft. A huge explosion occurred and all three aircraft were destroyed by fire. All six crew members escaped with various injuries.
