The airplane departed RAF Scampton in the evening of February 14 on an operation to Mannheim. While returning to base the following night, it ran out of fuel. The crew diverted to RAF Upwood where the airplane crashed on final approach at Glossmore Farm. All four crew members escaped uninjured.

While diving towards the intended target, the starboard engine surged and the airplane crashed in the North Wooton Range, about 4 miles north of King's Lynn. A crew was killed and two others were injured.

The pilot elected to return for an emergency landing when the airplane crashed near the airbase four minutes after takeoff. The pilot was injured.
