The airplane departed RAF Leeming at 1951LT on March 27 on an operation to Düsseldorf. It was abandoned at 0215LT north of Pickworth, Lincolnshire, and later crashed near RAF Cottesmore. All five crew members were rescued, among them one was injured.

Circumstances:
The airplane departed RAF Leeming at 2021LT on March 18 on an operation to Kiel. While returning to base the following night, flying at an altitude of 6,000 feet, the left engine failed and caught fire. The flames spread to the fuselage and the crew were ordered to bail out. Four occupants were found uninjured while the pilot was overcome by smoke and his body was found in the wreckage.

Shortly after takeoff from RAF Leeming, while in initial climb, the bomber stalled and crashed on a farm located near the airfield, bursting into flames. The captain was killed while all four other occupants were injured. The aircraft was destroyed.

While returning to base the next morning, the crew sent a distress call at 0610LT then the aircraft crashed into the sea. It is believed that it crashed about 10 miles east of the North Foreland but despite extensive search, no trace of the airplane or its crew was ever found.
