After takeoff from Gütersloh Airport, the airplane encountered difficulties to gain height. It contacted trees and crashed on hilly terrain located in Lämershagen, southeast of Bielefeld. All four crew members were killed.

Circumstances:
The twin engine airplane departed RAF Hemswell at 2018LT on March 7 on a patrol flight with a crew of four on board. On final approach to Digby Airport, while completing a last turn, the airplane went out of control and crashed. All four crew members were killed. Evidence suggests the crew has been engaged by the enemy as LAC Wood's body had sustained gun shot wounds.

The crew departed RAF Newmarket at 1830LT on a leaflet dropping mission over Germany (operation 'Nickel'). En route, weather conditions deteriorated, forcing the crew to return to his base. On approach to RAF Mildenhall in heavy rain falls, the aircraft went out of control and crashed in Barton Mills, southeast of the airbase. All six crew members were killed.

The crew was engaged in the reconnaissance's mission named 'Nickel' over Bremen, Germany. Some 11 minutes after takeoff from RAF Mildenhall, while climbing, the left engine failed. The crew elected to return when he lost control of the aircraft that crashed in a field located in Burnt Fen, some 11 km northwest of RAF Mildenhall. All six occupants were killed.
