The airplane departed RAF Upwood on a cross-country exercise. After crossing the coast of Lancashire, the left engine failed while the airplane was completing a left turn. It went out of control and crashed into the sea some five miles southwest of Morecambe. Two crew members were killed and a third was injured.

The crew was performing a local night training exercise at RAF Upwood. While completing a turn at low height, the airplane collided with a light pole and crashed onto the flare path. Both crew members were injured while seven airmen on the flare path were critically injured. Five of them died from injuries sustained.
