Circumstances:
The crew was returning to base following an operation to Merseburg. On final approach to RAF Dishforth, the crew encountered strong cross winds and lost control of the aircraft that went out of control and crashed short of runway. The copilot was killed while all four other occupants were injured.

The airplane departed RAF Dishforth at 1906LT on October 1st for an attack on synthetic oil installations in the Holten district. At 0130LT, while returning to its base, the airplane went out of control and crashed in an open field located in Hummelo. All five crew members were killed.

After being damaged by the German Flak, it was ditched in the North Sea about 120 miles east of of the Firth of Fourth. A crew drowned and all four other occupants were rescued from their dinghy by a naval launch.
