Circumstances:
The crew departed RAF Wattisham on a reconnaissance mission over Wilhelmshaven. While approaching the German coast, the airplane was shot down by the pilot of a German fighter and crashed into the sea some 10 km off Wangerooge Island. All three crew members were killed.

The crew was completing a local low-level training exercice out from RAF Wattisham. In flight, the crew lost control of the airplane that crashed in a pasture located in Barking Tye, two miles east of the airbase. A crew member was seriously injured and the second was killed.
