The airplane departed RAF Feltwell at 0001LT on an operation to Essen. While climbing, the crew encountered technical problems with the instruments and elected to return. Seven minutes after takeoff, the airplane crashed near the airbase. Five crew members were killed and a sixth was injured.

While returning to base the following night and just after passing over RAF Honington, it was shot down by a German fighter. Both engines caught fire and the bomber crashed one mile northeast of Thetford. Two crew members were killed and two others were rescued.

After a 180 turn, it entered an uncontrolled descent and crashed in a field located north of Sporle, some 12 km northeast of the airbase. A crew was injured and six others were killed.
