The aircraft departed Porto Alegre at 0600LT bound for Rio de Janeiro with six passengers and a crew of three on board. During the intermediate stop at Laguna, Santa Catarina, a seventh passenger boarded. The aircraft named 'Potyguar' continued to the northeast and while cruising some 500 metres off the beach of Icapara, the aircraft 'exploded', lost height and crashed into the sea. Nine occupants were quickly rescued by locals while a passenger, Colonel Attila Gaston Joseph Campos Salvaterra, was killed.

The aircraft named 'Santos Dumont' was engaged in a special flight over the Guanabara Bay to take part to the celebrations for the return of Alberto Santos Dumont in Brazil. While cruising at a height of 300 feet, the pilot was forced to make a sharp turn to avoid a collision with another Dornier Do J Wal registered P-BAIA and named 'Guanabara'. During the turn, a part of a wing failed due to a structural failure and the seaplane entered a dive and crashed in the Guanabara Bay, near the German ship named 'Cap Arcona' that just arrived in Rio with the Brazilian Aviator Alberto Santos Dumont on board. The seaplane crashed off the Cobras Island, killing all 14 people aboard.
Probable cause:
Structural failure of a wing during a sharp turn to avoid a collision with another aircraft.

The pilot Paul Rinaldo Redfern, sole on board, was performing a flight from Brunswick, Georgia, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At 1500LT, the crew of a Dutch Ship spotted the aircraft flying over the Caribbean Sea. Few hours later, the aircraft named 'Port of Brunswick' disappeared without trace. SAR operations were initiated but eventually suspended after few days as no trace of the aircraft nor the pilot was found. During a 13th expedition, an American team found the wreckage of the airplane in the jungle of Guyana 10 years later.
