The crew was engaged in a combined exercise with another RNAF Anson registered D-22 and carrying a crew of six as well. After takeoff from the Gilze-Rijen AFB, while in initial climb, both aircraft collided and crashed in a field. They were totally destroyed and all 12 crew members were killed.

Circumstances:

The crew was returning to base at Gilze-Rijen AFB following an operation. On approach at night, the crew encountered icing conditions and was unable to lower the flaps. The airplane stalled and crashed near Alphen, few km short of runway. All three crew members were killed.

Shortly after takeoff from Gilze-Rijen AFB, the bomber was shot down by a Hurricane and crashed near the airfield. All four crew members were injured. The Hurricane crashed as well, killing its pilot.

Passing over Grantham at night, the bomber collided with a Royal Air Force Airspeed Oxford that was completing a training flight with a crew of two on board. The JU.88 dove into the ground and crashed near Barrowby, west of Grantham. All three crew members were killed.
