While returning to base in the late evening, the crew was recalled an instructed to divert to RAF Acklington. On approach in poor weather conditions, the pilot descended too low when the airplane impacted trees and crashed one mile short of runway. Four crew members were killed and a fifth was injured.

It was damaged by enemy fire over the target area but the crew was able to evacuate the zone and to return to England. On approach to the British coast, the plane crashed into the sea some two miles off Brightlingsea. The pilot was killed and four others were rescued.
