Vickers 416 Wellington IC

The airplane departed RAF Elsham Wolds at 2031LT on August 28 on an operation to Mannheim. Passing over the Netherlands, it encountered stormy weather, was struck by lightning and crashed. Four crew members were killed and two others became PoW.

While returning to base the following night, the crew diverted to RAF West Raynham where the airplane crashed while trying to land in heavy rain and poor visibility, bursting into flames. All six crew members were injured.

The airplane departed RAF Marham at 2008LT on August 27 on an operation to Mannheim. The following night, while returning to base, the crew encountered very bad weather conditions and abandoned the airplane that entered a dive and crashed near Honing. All six crew members parachuted to safety.

While returning to base the following night, the crew tried to land at RAF Martlesham Heath but was unable to do so due to poor weather conditions over the area. Three crew members bailed out and the pilot made an emergency landing in Levington, on the River Orwell. All five crew members were uninjured.

All six crew members were rescued, three became PoW and three evaded.
