Circumstances:
Carrying 31 tons of telecommunications goods for a Portuguese company, the aircraft struck the ground 1,87 km short of runway 14 by thick fog. The Australian authorities said in their final report published in June 2004 that pilots did not follow approach procedures and that they were approaching in a too low altitude, after passing minimum safe altitude. No approach briefing was made, both pilots did not hold instrument ratings that entitled them to pilot the occurrence aircraft under instrument flight rules. A the time of accident, the visibility was 1,500 metres with fog and cloud base at 1,000 feet above ground level.
Causes:

Australian authorities said that this accident was the result of a Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT).
