Circumstances:
The approach to Kathmandu Airport was completed in marginal weather conditions with thunderstorm activity over the area. The crew started the approach to runway 02 but as he was unable to locate the runway, he requested permission to land on runway 20. Due to traffic on final a landing on runway 20 was not possible immediately so the crew initiated a right hand turn and was later cleared to land on runway 20. It appears that a certain confusion occurred between ATC and the pilot-in-command who stated he has the runway in sight and the controller who cleared him to land on runway 02 while he gave permission to land on runway 20 few seconds earlier. After touchdown on runway 02, the airplane went out of control, veered off runway to the right, went down an embankment, broke in several pieces and came to rest in flames on a soccer field. All four crew members and 47 passengers were killed while 20 others were injured, some of them seriously. The aircraft was destroyed by impact forces and a post crash fire. At the time of the accident, weather conditions were as follow: visibility up to 6 km, CB at 2,500 feet southeast, south and southwest of the airport with variable wind up to 6 knots from 240 to 320.
