Circumstances:
The crew left his base at 0533LT to attack the German U-Boat U-256 cruising in the North Atlantic. At 1115LT, the crew attacked the U-Boat that sunk to a depth of 110 metres. At 1220LT, the crew informed ground that he was returning to his base with an ETA at 1627LT. At 1515LT, an engine caught fire and the captain decided to ditch the aircraft off the Irish coast. While the aircraft sunk and was lost, all eight crew members took refuge in two dinghies and were later rescued.
